This week, we look at how a popular figure ended a lengthy European Tour drought at the controversial Saudi International. We also have a focus on putters and golf balls and look at why it is so important to pop down to the pro shop and talk to us about using the right equipment for your game.

Tour news

The wait is over

Graeme McDowell ended a near-six-year European Tour drought by battling through a blustery final day at Royal Greens Golf and Country Club to win by two from defending champion Dustin Johnson.

The likes of Phil Mickelson, Brooks Koepka, and Patrick Reed (along with Dustin Johnson) were just some of the star names skipping the PGA Tour’s stop at the Waste Management Phoenix Open (won by Webb Simpson) in favour of the Saudi International, but none could match McDowell’s winning 12-under-par.

The win sees the Northern Irishman move back into the world’s top fifty with one eye firmly on adding to his major tally in 2020.

Putt those extra shots away

Here in the shop, we often get asked for advice for quick fixes on how to cut shots from your round of golf, and I think you'd be surprised just how often the conversation turns to putting.

If you think about it; which club in your bag do you use the most during your round?

Driver? Maybe 10-12 times per round.
Irons? Maybe 5 times per iron per round.
Putter? Just about every single hole, often twice or even three times.

There are so many different types of putters; mallet or blade head, thick or thin grip, and different lengths available. Making sure that you're happy and suited to your putter is an absolute no-brainer.

Worth a try

They might not demand as much media coverage as some of the other products being launched right now but did you know Titleist has updated three of its ball models for 2020 too? Both of these balls are available in-store at a lower price point than the Pro V1s, but that doesn't make them any less of an option for your bag.

The new Tour Soft is a brutal combination of impressive distance off the tee with extra control and spin around the greens. However, if distance is your prime goal then you need to try the Velocity ball, which is available in several matte colours to add a bit of fun to your fourball.

The gloves are on

Golf is hard enough at the best of times but throw rain, wind and freezing temperatures into the mix and it becomes near-on impossible.
